Massachusetts Online
Defensive Driving
Massachusetts uses the Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP) rather than a traditional point system. Surchargeable events raise your premiums and can trigger mandatory RMV retraining. This course covers SDIP, Massachusetts OUI law, the lifetime lookback period, and the statewide handheld ban — and can earn you an insurance discount accepted by most Massachusetts insurers.

Massachusetts by the Numbers
What this course can and cannot do in Massachusetts
SDIP surchargeable events cannot be removed: Massachusetts SDIP surcharge points are assessed by your insurer for each surchargeable event on your driving record and remain until the event ages off (typically 6 years). No driving course can remove a surchargeable event or eliminate the associated premium surcharge. Our course does not interact with your SDIP record in any way.
RMV retraining requires a specific approved course: Massachusetts RMV retraining — triggered when you accumulate 3 surchargeable events in 2 years — requires a specific RMV-approved course (currently the NSC Defensive Driving Course for Massachusetts). Our course is not necessarily that approved course and may not satisfy a mandatory retraining notice. If you have received an RMV retraining notice, contact the Massachusetts RMV before enrolling in any course.
Ticket dismissal requires individual court approval: Massachusetts does not have a statewide law allowing traffic tickets to be dismissed by completing a defensive driving course. Some courts and prosecutors allow it on a case-by-case basis. If ticket dismissal is your goal, appear at your court date and secure permission from the judge or magistrate before enrolling.
Insurance discount is the reliable benefit: Most Massachusetts auto insurers offer a voluntary premium discount for completing an approved defensive driving course. This discount is separate from any SDIP surcharge on your policy. Contact your insurer before enrolling to confirm they accept our certificate and verify your eligibility and discount amount.
Massachusetts Traffic Law Overview
Understanding SDIP, Massachusetts speed limits, the lifetime OUI lookback, and the full handheld ban prepares you for both the course and the road.
SDIP Surchargeable Events
Massachusetts uses the Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP), not a traditional demerit point system. Insurers assign surcharge points for each surchargeable event — a traffic citation or at-fault accident that appears on your driving record. Accumulating 3 surchargeable events within 2 years triggers mandatory RMV retraining. Seven events in 3 years results in a 60-day license suspension.
Speed Limits
Massachusetts sets a maximum speed of 65 mph on rural interstate highways. Many urban interstates and state routes — including portions of I-93 and I-90 in and around Boston — are posted at 55 mph or lower. The default speed limit on undivided roads is 30 mph unless otherwise posted. Speed limits in school zones and near hospitals are strictly enforced.
OUI Law
Massachusetts uses the term OUI (Operating Under the Influence). The standard BAC limit is 0.08%. Drivers under 21 face a 0.02% zero-tolerance limit; CDL holders face 0.04%. Massachusetts is the only state with a lifetime OUI lookback — a driver with two prior OUIs from decades ago faces mandatory prison time as a third-offense felony. A third OUI also results in an 8-year license revocation.
Handheld & Texting Ban
Massachusetts bans all handheld phone use while driving for all drivers — both calls and texts require hands-free mode. Drivers under 18 may not use any mobile device at all, even hands-free. Fines are $100 for a first violation, $250 for a second, and $500 for a third or subsequent violation. A handheld conviction is also a surchargeable event under the SDIP and can raise your insurance premiums.
Massachusetts SDIP Surchargeable Event Points
SDIP points are assessed by your insurer — not the RMV — and drive premium surcharges at each policy renewal. Three events in 2 years also triggers mandatory RMV retraining.
| Surchargeable Event | SDIP Points | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Minor traffic violation (speeding, cell phone, etc.) | 2 pts | Insurance surcharge applied at renewal |
| Minor at-fault accident ($1,000 to $5,000 in damage) | 3 pts | Insurance surcharge applied at renewal |
| Major at-fault accident (over $5,000 in damage or injury) | 4 pts | Insurance surcharge applied at renewal |
| Major traffic violation (OUI, leaving the scene, drag racing) | 5 pts | Insurance surcharge + potential license action |
