Louisiana by the Numbers
What this course can and cannot do in Louisiana
Louisiana does not operate a statewide driver's license point system, so there are no points for any course to reduce. Violations remain on your driving record. Ticket dismissal is not automatic in Louisiana — you must obtain court approval before enrolling if dismissal is your goal, and not all courts participate. The benefit this course reliably delivers is an insurance premium discount: most Louisiana auto insurers accept our certificate. Given Louisiana's unusually high insurance rates, even a modest discount can add up to meaningful annual savings. Contact your insurer before enrolling to confirm eligibility and discount amount.
Louisiana Traffic Law Overview
Understanding Louisiana's traffic laws keeps you safe and helps you make sense of the course material.
Violation Record
Louisiana does not use a numerical driver's license point system. Violations appear on your driving record and affect your insurance rates, but there is no cumulative point threshold for automatic license suspension.
Speed Limits
Most Louisiana interstates are posted at 70 mph. I-49 allows 75 mph on designated rural sections. Urban interstates drop to 60 mph, rural non-divided highways to 55 mph, and rural divided highways to 65 mph. Always check posted signs.
OWI Law
Louisiana uses the term OWI (Operating While Intoxicated). The standard limit is 0.08% BAC. Enhanced penalties begin at 0.15% and again at 0.20%+. Under-21 drivers face a 0.02% limit; CDL holders 0.04%. A third OWI offense is a felony.
Handheld & Texting
Texting while driving is a primary offense statewide: $500 first offense, $1,000 for subsequent violations. Louisiana's 2025 handheld ban (HB 519) prohibits handheld use statewide (secondary enforcement) and in school/work zones (primary). Full primary enforcement began January 1, 2026.
