Iowa by the Numbers
What this course can and cannot do in Iowa
Defensive driving cannot remove points in Iowa: Iowa does not have a statewide program that allows point reduction through a defensive driving course. Completing this course will not remove or reduce points on your Iowa driving record. Points remain until they expire naturally — generally 5 years from conviction.
Ticket dismissal is not automatic: Iowa has no statewide law that automatically dismisses traffic tickets upon completion of a defensive driving course. Some judges may allow dismissal on a case-by-case basis. If ticket dismissal is your goal, contact your court before your citation deadline and request permission before enrolling.
Insurance discount is the reliable benefit: Most Iowa auto insurers accept our certificate for a premium discount. Contact your insurer before enrolling to confirm eligibility and discount amount.
Iowa Traffic Law Overview
Understanding Iowa's point system, speed limits, OWI law, and new hands-free requirement helps you stay safe and get the most out of the course.
Point System
Iowa assigns demerit points upon conviction of traffic violations. Accumulating 3 or more moving violations within any 12-month period can trigger a license suspension — one of the lowest thresholds in the country. Six violations in two years designates a habitual offender. Points expire 5 years from conviction; OWI-related points last 12 years.
Speed Limits
Rural interstate highways in Iowa are posted at 70 mph. Urban interstates typically range from 55 to 65 mph. Most two-lane highways carry a 55 mph limit, while selected multilane divided highways allow 65 mph. School zones and residential streets are generally 25 mph.
OWI Law
Iowa uses the term OWI (Operating While Intoxicated). The standard BAC limit is 0.08%; CDL holders face 0.04% and drivers under 21 face 0.02%. Iowa's OWI lookback period is 12 years — among the longest in the nation. A third OWI is a Class D felony. All OWI convictions require an ignition interlock device and a substance abuse evaluation.
2025 Hands-Free Law
Iowa enacted a hands-free driving law in April 2025. Drivers may not hold a phone or personal electronic device while operating a vehicle. All calls must be in hands-free mode; texting, scrolling, and video calls while holding a device are prohibited. Fines took effect January 1, 2026: $100 standard, $500 if injury results, $1,000 if a death results.
Iowa Demerit Point Values
Points are assessed upon conviction. Three or more moving violations in any 12-month period can result in license suspension.
| Violation | Points |
|---|---|
| Suspended, revoked, or denied license | 2 pts |
| License revoked for alcohol or drug offense | 3 pts |
| OWI / BAC of 0.08% or higher | 4 pts |
| Leaving the scene of an accident | 5 pts |
| Eluding a law enforcement officer | 5 pts |
| Vehicular manslaughter | 6 pts |
