Connecticut by the Numbers
What this course can and cannot do in Connecticut
Point reduction and the Operator Retraining Program: Connecticut's Operator Retraining Program (ORP) is mandatory for drivers who reach 7 points in any three-year period, and the DMV approves specific courses for that requirement. Our course is not necessarily the DMV-approved ORP course and cannot guarantee point reduction or satisfy that mandatory requirement. Points in Connecticut naturally expire 24 months from the date of the offense.
Ticket dismissal requires individual court approval: Connecticut does not have a statewide law allowing traffic tickets to be dismissed by completing a defensive driving course. Some judges and municipalities allow it on a case-by-case basis. If ticket dismissal is your goal, appear at your court date and request permission from the judge before enrolling.
Insurance discount is the reliable benefit: Most Connecticut auto insurers accept our certificate for a premium discount. Contact your insurer before enrolling to confirm eligibility and discount amount.
Connecticut Traffic Law Overview
Understanding Connecticut's point system, speed limits, OUI law, and handheld phone ban prepares you for both the course and the road.
Point System
Connecticut assigns demerit points upon conviction of a traffic violation. The DMV sends a warning letter at 6 points, requires mandatory driver retraining at 7 points in any three-year period, and suspends licenses when the total exceeds 10 points. A second suspension within 5 years can last up to 2 years. Points expire 24 months from the date of the offense.
Speed Limits
The maximum speed limit on rural interstates in Connecticut is 65 mph. Urban interstates, including much of I-95 and I-91 through Hartford and New Haven, are posted at 55 mph. Connecticut's dense network means drivers frequently transition between speed zones. Always check posted signs.
OUI Law
Connecticut uses the term OUI (Operating Under the Influence). The standard BAC limit is 0.08%. Enhanced penalties apply at 0.16% or higher. Drivers under 21 face a 0.02% zero-tolerance limit; CDL holders face 0.04%. Connecticut uses a 10-year lookback period. A third OUI within 10 years is a felony. A first OUI typically results in a 45-day suspension plus one year of mandatory ignition interlock.
Handheld & Texting Ban
Connecticut bans all handheld phone use while driving for all drivers — both calls and texting require hands-free mode. Drivers under 18 may not use any mobile device at all, even hands-free. Fines are $200 for a first violation, $375 for a second, and $625 for a third or subsequent violation. A conviction also adds 1 demerit point to your Connecticut driving record.
Connecticut Demerit Point Values
Points are assessed upon conviction, not citation. Reaching 10 points triggers a 30-day suspension; points expire 24 months from the offense date.
