What You Need to Know About Virginia REAL ID Compliance
The REAL ID Act established minimum federal security standards for state driver's licenses and ID cards. Starting May 7, 2025, federal agencies require REAL ID-compliant identification for domestic air travel, entering military bases, and accessing federal facilities. If your license doesn't have a gold star in the upper right corner, you'll need to upgrade--or use a passport.
Is Your Current License REAL ID Compliant?
Virginia REAL ID-compliant licenses display a gold star in the upper right corner. If your license has this star, you're already compliant. If it doesn't, you can upgrade at any Virginia DMV location. Standard licenses remain valid for driving in Virginia but cannot be used for federal identification purposes.
Documents Required to Get REAL ID
You must bring originals or certified copies of the following to your DMV appointment:
- Proof of Identity: U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization, or permanent resident card
- Social Security Number: Original Social Security card, W-2 form, or tax return showing your full SSN
- Proof of Virginia Residency: Two documents showing your current Virginia address (utility bill, bank statement, or lease dated within 60 days)
- Proof of Legal Name: Marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order if your name has changed from your birth certificate
Photocopies are not accepted. Bring originals or certified government-issued copies.
How to Apply
REAL ID requires an in-person DMV visit--you cannot apply online:
- Schedule an appointment at a Virginia DMV location (walk-ins accepted but waits can be long)
- Gather all required documents before your appointment
- Complete the application at the DMV counter
- Have your photo taken
- Pay the standard renewal or replacement fee
- Receive your new REAL ID-compliant license by mail within 1-2 weeks
Fees
REAL ID-compliant licenses cost the same as standard Virginia licenses:
- Driver's license renewal (8 years): $75
- Non-driver ID renewal (8 years): $27.50
- Replacement license: $60
Who Needs REAL ID?
You need REAL ID if you plan to fly domestically on a commercial airline after May 7, 2025, or need access to federal buildings or military bases. If you travel internationally and already have a passport, a passport also satisfies REAL ID requirements. If you never fly or enter federal facilities, a standard Virginia license is fine for all state and local purposes.
Apply Early
DMV appointments fill quickly as the May 2025 deadline approaches. Applying now avoids long waits and last-minute stress. Virginia residents who fly regularly or need federal building access should make their appointment as soon as possible.
